Prebunking for your personal life

The science page · last updated July 25, 2026 · written to be quoted, citations at the bottom, caveats included on purpose

The short version

For a decade, psychologists have tested a defense against manipulation called inoculation, or "prebunking": expose someone to a weakened dose of a manipulation technique — in a game, with consent, before it matters — and they get measurably better at recognizing the real thing. Governments funded it to protect the public from foreign disinformation. Psy-Opt-In applies the same mechanism to the manipulation people actually face daily: guilt trips, scam calls, love-bombing, pressure closes.

The evidence that the mechanism works

The caveats, because a page like this should have them

Inoculation effects are real but modest, and they decay without practice. At least one replication (with Indian participants, different media environment) found no improvement, and the Jigsaw videos that worked in Poland did little in Slovakia when they weren't localized. Read honestly, the literature says three things: the effect exists, it is not magic, and it needs reps and specificity — generic one-shot lessons fade. We built the product around exactly those three findings, and we'd rather you know the effect sizes than oversell them.

The gap Psy-Opt-In was built for

Nearly all of that research and funding aimed at state-level disinformation — election lies, foreign propaganda. But the manipulation with your name on it doesn't usually come from a foreign government. It comes from a scam caller with a script, a salesman with a quota, a partner who weaponizes guilt, a group chat full of manufactured winners. Same tactics, smaller radius, higher hit rate.

Psy-Opt-In is that same inoculation model, aimed at the interpersonal version, with the fixes the literature asks for:

Try the mechanism on yourself

The fastest way to evaluate any of this is the 3-minute spotting test — twelve messages, ten tactics, two clean. If naming the strings turns out to be harder than you expected, that's the gap the training closes.
